Northwest’s Walnut is grown in both the Glacial and Appalachian regions.
American Walnut is one of the scarcest and most coveted native hardwoods. It is in a class by itself. The sapwood of Walnut is nearly white, while the heartwood is light brown to dark, chocolate brown, often with a purplish cast and darker streaks. Northwest Walnut is steamed to enhance the chocolate brown heartwood and darken the sapwood. The wood is heavy, hard and stiff and with a high shock resistance. It is generally coarse textured and produces distinctive grain patterns. Walnut is used for dining room and bedroom furniture, bookcases, desks, tables, cabinets, shotguns and rifles, and interior finishes.
It is a dense wood, but it machines, nails and glues without difficulty. Walnut has good bending properties, manufactures and stains well and can be polished to an exceptional finish.

Birch is one of the most popular hardwoods for veneer and interior work. It tends to be a light reddish brown, with nearly white sapwood. Occasionally figured pieces are available with a wide, shallow curl similar to the curl found in Cherry. Generally, Birch is a straight-grained wood with a fine uniform texture. It is often used for furniture, cabinetry, interior finish and veneer.
Birch is also in demand for toys, tool handles, boxes, woodenware and interior doors.
Birch and is heavy, hard and strong with a fine, uniform texture. Birch takes stain and polish extremely well.

Now confined to the eastern United States, American Beech is sometimes underrated and under-appreciated: which may be due to its somewhat bland appearance.
With straight grain and medium to fine uniform texture, the sapwood of American beech is white with a red tinge, while the heartwood is light to dark reddish brown.
Beech wood is used to make flooring, furniture, veneer plywood, and railroad ties. It is especially favored as fuel wood because of its high density and good burning qualities.
With overall good workability, Beech responds superbly to steam-bending. It does, however, have a large amount of movement in service, so movement and wood stability must be taken into account.

Soft maple is used for furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, musical instruments, turnings and millwork. It is lower-priced than Hard Maple and sometimes used as a substitute. Both Soft Maple and Hard Maple can be purchased in special white color pulls.
Soft maple is also used in veneer, pallets, plywood, barrels, crates and flooring.

Red Oak is a timeless, American classic used in furniture, flooring, cabinetry, joinery and architectural millwork. The sapwood of Red Oak is white to very light brown, while the heartwood is reddish brown. Fast-grown Red Oak, with wide rings, is stronger and heavier than slow-grown Red Oak. We sort our red oak by color to help reduce waste and produce cabinets and furniture with beautiful, uniform color tones. It is graded after kiln drying and planing and offer unique quality consistency compared to commodity oak products.
Red Oak is also used in railroad ties, fence posts, veneer, furniture, cabinets, paneling, flooring, caskets, and pulpwood.

The sapwood of hickory is white, tinged with brown, while the heartwood is pale to reddish brown. Hickory has coarse texture and usually straight grain, but can be wavy or irregular. Hickory is a traditional choice for cabinetry and furniture with lots of character.
Hickory is also used in tool handles, dowels, ladders, picks and axes, sporting goods, and flooring.
Hickory rates above average in most working properties, except in shaping and nail-holding ability. It can be difficult to machine and has a moderate blunting effect on tools. Hickory has excellent bending properties and accepts stains and finishes very well.

Pacific Coast Maple is one of the few commercial hardwood species in the Western region and the only commercial Maple on the West Coast. Pacific Coast Maple’s color is pale pinkish-brown to almost white. There is little color variation between the heartwood and the sapwood. It has fine grain similar to birch and cherry that makes it perfect for furniture, cabinet and millwork applications. Pacific Coast Maple dries easily with little degrade and has good dimensional stability after drying. Pacific Coast maple accepts stain and finish beautifully, creating the visual appeal of cherry and eastern maples.
Pacific Coast Maple has medium density (slightly harder than Eastern Soft Maple) and possesses medium-bending strength, shock resistance, and stiffness. It has machining, turning and bending properties and nails, screws and glues well.

Natural consistency and beautiful color can give it the visual appeal of cherry, maple or birch. Alder dries to an even honey tone and can be finished to resemble more expensive fine-grained species. There is little color variation between the heartwood and sapwood, making alder also ideal for light or natural finishes.
